What Birmingham Summers Do to an Air Conditioner
Our cooling season runs from spring well into fall, which is most of the year, and the equipment here works harder and longer than it would almost anywhere north of us. A few things about this area show up in our repair calls over and over.
Pollen and tree debris. Birmingham sits in a valley ringed by wooded hills, and the pollen load here is heavy and lasts for months. It packs filters, coats the evaporator coil, and mats the outside of the condenser along with leaf litter and grass clippings. A choked coil is the single most common reason a system freezes up or stops cooling well, and it stresses the compressor while it does it.
Humidity and condensate. The air here is wet from spring through October, which means your system is pulling water out of it continuously for months. Drain lines grow buildup, clog, and back up. Sometimes that shows up as water around the air handler or a stain on a ceiling, and sometimes the float switch does its job and shuts the whole system off, which reads to you like a unit that simply died.
Summer storms. The power does not have to go out completely to do damage. A brief sag or surge during a thunderstorm is enough to pit a contactor or take out a capacitor, and a system that ran fine yesterday will not start today.
Runtime. A unit that runs seven months a year accumulates wear faster than the same unit in a milder climate. Capacitors, contactors, and compressors are the parts that feel it first, and it is why systems here tend to need attention earlier than the brochure suggests.
None of this means your system is doomed. It means the failures we see here are predictable, and a technician who works this area every day knows where to look first.
Repair or Replace
It is a fair question to ask before you spend anything, and the answer comes down to three things: how old the unit is, what actually failed, and whether it has been failing repeatedly.
The math shifts as a unit ages. Past twelve or fifteen years, repairs start landing more often and costing more each time, and money put into an aging system does not come back to you when it fails for good the following summer. If your unit runs on R-22, which was phased out years ago, refrigerant work on it is expensive for what you get. Newer systems run R-410A, which is being phased down in its turn, so recharges on those will climb as supply tightens.
A single fault on an otherwise healthy unit is a repair. Several at once on a unit past its twelfth summer usually means a repair buys you this season rather than the next five, and you are better off knowing that before you spend. We will put both numbers in front of you.
